Fish might be greatly impressed by some of today’s “glamour” fly rods. You know the ones – trendy names, slick advertising, hefty price tags.  Truth be told, the only thing that impresses fish is presentation. That’s why Elkhorn rods are built for down-to-earth fly fishers who want fine, affordable, honest performance and quality above fancy labels and high budget-advertising.

The most common Fly Rods today are still Graphite, providing power and strength along with good feel. Most are made of a carbon/graphite or graphite/boron composite.

Bamboo fly rods are considered the most Classic and beautiful, but also the most fragile requiring the most care. They have been around for centuries, and provide CRAZY delicacy and softness to your casts. You'll find the dry fly elitists using bamboo.

Glass Fly Rods were the most common in the 70's and fell out of favor with the advancement of graphite technology. Now, with high-tech glass fibers and low modulus graphite, there is a new resurgence in glass Fly Rods. The best glass Fly Rods today combine the strength and power of graphite with a gentler action that more closely resembles bamboo. Something graphite has not been able to do.

What purpose does the fly rod serve? Let me count the ways.
1) the Fly Rod connects you to the fight by transmitting every head shake, turn and run of the fish.
2) the Fly Rod allows you to present the very smallest and lightest fly to the fish, whether in a delicate manner needed for dropping that dry fly lightly on the surface or to power your cast into a heavy wind.
3) the Fly Rod gives you control of the drift, allowing you to mend your line up or downstream to prevent drag on your line. Remember, "Perpetrating the Fraud" means presenting an artificial fly to a fish in a manner that looks natural in order to solicit a strike.
4) the Fly Rod holds the reel so you won't have to store your fly line in your shirt pocket.
The solitude of a trout stream or the calm waters of a lake have a healing power that can't be explained, but also, can't be denied!  Healing our soldiers can be a long process. We help them reconnect with the peace for which they fought so hard!
I am a proud volunteer for Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing.  The Denver chapter is currently teaching disabled Veterans to tie flies and cast a fly rod.  We now offer rod building classes for veterans.  The flies they tie will be lost or tattered with use, but a fly rod can be be a life long companion in their fly fishing efforts.
Support our Disabled Veterans. We owe them so much more for keeping us safe and protecting our Freedom. Visit ProjectHealingWaters.org today and get involved in your area.
